Organic Basil Sold at Trader Joe’s & Other Markets Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

On April 18, 2024, Infinite Herbs, LLC issued a recall of certain packages of Infinite Herbs and Melissa’s brand fresh organic basil due to the potential presence of Salmonella. The recall was initiated after the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 12 illnesses linked with the recalled products.

Salmonella is an organism that has been linked to fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, Salmonella can produce fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Recalled products (see product photos for Infinite Herbs and Melissa’s brand) were distributed to Trader Joe’s, Fruit Center Marketplace stores, and Dierberg’s stores in 29 states and Washington, D.C. Affected products can be further identified by the following:

  • Infinite Herbs fresh organic basil, 2.5 oz packages, UPC: 8 18042 02147 7, Sold Between February 1 and April 6
